Somali President Marks 65th Anniversary of Northern Regions’ Independence

Mogadishu — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday laid a wreath at the historic Dhagah-Tuur Monument in Mogadishu to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the independence of Somalia’s Northern Regions from British colonial rule. The solemn ceremony was held in honor of the brave men and women who fought for Somalia’s freedom and to reflect on the nation’s journey since July 26, 1960.

Surrounded by senior government officials, community leaders, and members of the public, President Mohamud paid tribute to the historical significance of the Dhagah-Tuur Monument, which symbolizes the struggle for independence and unity. Following the wreath-laying, he observed a moment of silence to remember those who sacrificed their lives for Somalia’s sovereignty.

Addressing the gathering after the ceremony, President Mohamud emphasized that the occasion was not only a celebration of past achievements but also a reminder of the collective responsibilities moving forward.

“Our independence is a cherished milestone that must inspire all Somalis to work together for peace, unity, and progress,” he said. “The spirit of freedom and self-determination must continue to guide us as we tackle the challenges facing our nation today.”

The President further called on Somalis at home and abroad to recommit to building a stable and prosperous future, underlining that true independence means safeguarding national sovereignty and preserving the nation’s cultural and historical heritage.

The Dhagah-Tuur Monument, one of Somalia’s most iconic landmarks, holds deep cultural significance, as it commemorates the June 26, 1960, day when the Northern Regions first gained independence, paving the way for Somalia’s unification with the South on July 1 of the same year.

This year’s commemoration attracted a diverse crowd of citizens waving Somali flags and sharing stories of resilience and unity — a poignant reminder that, despite decades of challenges, Somalia’s people remain proud of their hard-earned independence and determined to forge a brighter future.
