Somali President Renews Amnesty to Al-Shabaab Militants

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated his offer of amnesty to Al-Shabaab militants, encouraging them to leave the group and reintegrate into society.

During a speech at a mosque in Mogadishu on Friday, he emphasized that those who defect will not face humiliation or imprisonment.

Instead, they will have the opportunity to live with dignity, joining various sectors such as the security forces, government, or business community.

This renewed call for amnesty is part of ongoing efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab, which is designated as a terrorist organization by both Somalia and the United States.

The group has been responsible for numerous attacks in the region, contributing to instability and violence.

President Mohamud also downplayed recent security alerts warning of potential attacks in Somalia, including Mogadishu.

While the specifics of these alerts were not detailed, his remarks suggest a focus on maintaining public confidence and stability amid ongoing security challenges.

This approach reflects a broader strategy to address the root causes of extremism by offering former militants a path to reintegration, while simultaneously working to improve security and governance in the country.
