Somali President Willing to Relinquish Power for Unity with Somaliland

Mogadishu, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared his willingness to step aside from office if it would help pave the way for genuine unity between Somalia and Somaliland.

Speaking at the 26 June independence celebrations in Mogadishu, President Mohamud described national unity as the most pressing issue facing the nation and said he would put his country’s interests above personal ambitions.

“I am ready to relinquish power if it paves the way for unity with Somaliland,” he told a large crowd of dignitaries, elders, and citizens gathered to mark Somalia’s 65th independence anniversary.

The President also took the opportunity to speak candidly about Somalia’s political culture, condemning clan-based rivalries and intimidation-driven politics as “irrelevant to Somalia’s current realities.”

He noted that these outdated practices continue to hinder Somalia’s progress and called on political actors to focus on inclusive governance.

“We cannot build a strong, united Somalia by resorting to clan feuds and threats,” President Mohamud said.

Looking ahead to the 2026 elections, President Mohamud expressed his willingness to engage in “an honest dialogue” with all stakeholders — including political leaders, civil society, and opposition figures — to resolve disputes.

“We need to put aside differences, come to the table, and chart a common path for Somalia,” he said.

The President’s remarks reflect a shift toward dialogue and national reconciliation as Somalia approaches a crucial election period and seeks long-term stability and territorial integrity.
