Nairobi, Kenya – A 17-year-old suspect identified as Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf has been taken into custody following a public outcry over the desecration of the Kenyan national flag during a football match held at Nyayo Stadium on September 20, 2025.
The arrest, confirmed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), follows an incident that occurred during a high-profile football match between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC. Videos and images from the event circulated widely on social media, showing two individuals displaying blatant disrespect toward the national flag — an act that ignited widespread condemnation from citizens and public officials alike.
According to the DCI, Yusuf was among those filmed in the now-viral footage and had been the subject of an active manhunt since the incident. He was apprehended earlier today and is currently in police custody, where he is expected to face charges under Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblems, and Names Act (Cap 99). The law criminalizes any form of disrespect — whether by speech, conduct, or written expression — toward national symbols, including the flag and anthem.
“The flag represents the sovereignty, unity, and heritage of Kenya. Any act that undermines these values is taken with the utmost seriousness,” said a DCI spokesperson during a media briefing.
Under the Act, conviction can result in a fine, imprisonment, or both, depending on the gravity of the offence.
The second individual involved in the incident remains at large. Authorities believe he is still within Kenyan borders and have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend him. The public has been urged to share any relevant information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
The Ministry of Sports and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also released a joint statement condemning the act and reaffirming their commitment to upholding national values during public sporting events.
“Sport is a unifying force, and our symbols must be treated with respect at all times. We call upon all stakeholders to promote patriotism and national pride,” the statement read.
The arrest has stirred national debate on civic education and the importance of respecting national symbols. While some Kenyans have called for stricter enforcement of the law, others are advocating for rehabilitative approaches, especially considering Yusuf’s young age.
As investigations continue, Yusuf is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days. The DCI has assured the public that justice will be served and that such actions will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
