Somali telcos have agreed to allow their customers to make calls across networks from January 2023.
Telecom firms in the country signed an agreement on Monday, December 5.
The Somali National Communications Authority (SNCA) oversaw the signing of the historic and momentous agreement between the telecommunication companies.
Over the years, Somalis have been unable to call each other across different telcos.
Consequently, the situation forced users in the country to register and maintain several SIM cards.
Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, the NCA General Manager, commended the telcos for the latest development.
Sheikh added that the agreement resolves more issues.
For example, it has also resolved the issue of Mobile Termination Rates. However, it has left the issue of a standard MTR threshold unresolved.
Jama Hassan Khalif, the federal Minister of Communications and Technology, added that the new agreement has broken the barriers between mobile operators in the East African nation.
