Somali Trade Unions Call for Peaceful Elections and Campaigns

Somali trade unions issued a statement calling for peaceful elections and campaigns in the country.

On December 14, the trade unions released a statement asking authorities and political parties to ensure that they give the country elections devoid of any form of violence.

The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) led other trade unions in demanding for a credible and peaceful process.

FESTU signed a joint statement with Somali Agricultural and Food Workers Union, Somali Tailors and Textile Workers Union, and National Electricity Workers Union of Somalia.

Others included National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), Somali Maritime and Port Workers Union, and Somali Telecommunications and Posts Union to mention a few.

In their statement, the trade unions called for “restraint and tolerance.”

Additionally, they called for an end to the “hate speech” that seems to be invading and pervading exchanges between politicians.
