Somali, U.S. Envoys Pledge Closer Cooperation at UN Meeting

Washington, DC, United States – Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Osman, met with the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Michael G. Waltz, in what both sides described as a warm and forward-looking engagement. The two diplomats discussed regional and global issues, reaffirming a mutual commitment to deepen cooperation on peace, security, and development.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, Ambassador Osman highlighted Somalia’s ongoing reforms in governance, economic recovery, and counterterrorism, stressing the critical role of international partnership in sustaining the country’s progress. Ambassador Waltz, who recently took up his post, praised Somalia’s resilience and underscored the United States’ continued support for the Horn of Africa nation’s stabilization and institution-building efforts.

Their dialogue touched on a broad range of challenges, from global security threats and humanitarian crises to climate resilience and youth empowerment. Both envoys agreed that collaboration between Somalia, the United States, and the international community remains essential to achieving sustainable peace and prosperity.

The meeting, held at the UN headquarters in New York, marked a positive start to what officials described as a “renewed spirit of partnership.” It also came at a critical time as Somalia prepares for the full transition from the African Union’s peace mission to a national security-led framework, and as the country strengthens its voice in international diplomacy.

For many observers, the engagement signaled not just a routine diplomatic courtesy, but a reaffirmation of shared priorities—stability, cooperation, and progress—in an increasingly complex global landscape.
