A Somali woman has been elected one of the members of the Port of Seattle Commission.

Hamdi Mohamed created history after she became the first woman of Somali descent to be elected to join the Commission.

Apart from that, Mohamed also created further piece of history after she became the first Commissioner to be elected from South King County.

Mohamed was born in Somalia.

Her family then moved to the United States when she was a 3-year old child.

At the time, Somalia was experiencing the Civil War that killed thousands of people and left millions displaced and in despair.

Mohamed joins a growing list of Somalis creating waves in different spheres of life in the US.

Ilhan Omar, another Somali woman, has already left a mark in the US politics after being elected the Minnesota 5th District Congresswoman.
