Somalia Willing to Accept Fresh Post-AMISOM Mandate

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has expressed willingness to discuss the post-African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) mandate afresh.

For months, Somalia has adamantly refused to accept the new AMISOM mandate.

FGS has repeatedly stated that it has the wherewithal to take charge of all the security-related functions from AMISOM.

Mohamed Abdirizak, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the country is now willing to consider the new mandate.

He spoke on November 10 during a meeting with the 15-member African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council.

While stating his country’s willingness to look at the matter anew, Abdirizak blamed the AU for not considering Somalia’s proposals.

The minister reminded AMISOM of the importance of seeking the host nation’s consent if such transition plans are to succeed.
