Somali Women Worried over Low Number of Elected Female Lawmakers

Women in Somalia are worried about the country’s ability to meet the requirements of the new rule regarding the increased number of female legislators in parliament.

Asha Gelle, the Deputy Chairperson of the Goodwill Ambassadors for Somali Women 30 Percent group, spoke on this issue on January 30.

According to Gelle, the group she leads discovered that only 15 women have won elections to represent their seats in the House of the People (Lower House).

In her words, the expectation was that 22-25 women would have won elections as of now.

Her sentiments follow the realization that the country is way behind schedule after holding elections for 76 Lower House seats.

She called upon more leaders and stakeholders to increase this number.
