Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia, in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu, officially launched Somali Youth Week with a lively basketball game, marking both the start of a national celebration and the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Somalia and China.
Held in Mogadishu, the event brought together young athletes, government officials, and representatives from the Chinese Embassy to promote youth empowerment, sportsmanship, and the enduring friendship between the two nations. The game was not only a display of athletic talent but also a symbol of unity and cross-cultural cooperation.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth and Sports emphasized the importance of engaging youth in sports as a pathway to peace, health, and national development. “This basketball game reflects our commitment to empowering Somali youth while honoring a longstanding partnership with China,” the minister said.
Wang Yu, the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, also addressed the crowd, reaffirming China’s continued support for Somalia’s development efforts, particularly in education, sports, and infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of people-to-people ties and praised the energy and enthusiasm of Somali youth.
This year’s Somali Youth Week will feature a range of activities across the country, including sports tournaments, youth forums, and cultural exhibitions aimed at celebrating the role of young people in shaping Somalia’s future.
The basketball match served as a powerful reminder of how sports can build bridges and inspire a generation to strive for excellence, unity, and international solidarity.
