Somalia Accuses UNSOM of No Longer Being Responsive

The Federal Government of Somalia has accused United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) of not being responsive.

Abucar Osman Balle, Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, made this accusation while addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday, August 28.

In his address to the UNSC, Ambassador Balle said UNSOM had failed to response to the changing environment in which it operates.

Further, he indicated that UNSOM no longer operates in a manner that is commensurate with the efforts and achievements of the government of Somalia.

Consequently, Balle said UNSOM has become more reactive rather than responsive.

He went ahead to say that UNSOM has neither provided the technical assistance nor the political support needed to build a prosperous state for all Somalis.

Therefore, Balle urged the Secretary General of the UN to institute an independent assessment of the organization as soon as possible.

He also urged the UNSC to review UNSOM’s mandate to ensure that it remains flexible, responsive, and awake to the realities in the country.
