Somalia and AUSSOM Leaders Deepen Security Cooperation Amid Transition Push

Mogadishu, Somalia — The African Union Senior Security Representative in Somalia (SRCC) and Head of African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene Boly, met on Tuesday with Somalia’s National Security Adviser, Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf, at AUSSOM headquarters in Mogadishu, where both sides held in-depth discussions on strengthening cooperation and sustaining joint security gains.

The talks came at a crucial time as Somalia and its partners continue to consolidate progress made in the fight against Al-Shabaab while preparing for a more Somali-led security framework. The meeting focused on reinforcing coordination between AUSSOM and national security institutions, ensuring the continuity of joint military operations, and enhancing stabilization efforts in newly liberated areas.

One of the key priorities discussed was securing predictable and sustainable funding for AUSSOM, a concern that has shaped recent African Union and United Nations consultations. Both sides also examined modalities for the planned deployment of Egyptian forces under AUSSOM, aimed at bolstering operational capacity and maintaining the momentum against extremist groups.

The meeting underscored a shared vision: a stable, self-reliant Somalia capable of managing its own security while benefiting from strategic regional and continental partnerships. Amb. Boly and Amb. Aweys reiterated their governments’ commitment to close coordination and to ensuring that AUSSOM’s evolving mandate remains aligned with Somalia’s long-term peace and security goals.

As Somalia transitions toward greater national ownership of its security architecture, the collaboration between AUSSOM and Somali institutions remains a vital pillar of the country’s path toward durable peace and stability.
