Somalia and Djibouti Sign MoU to Deepen Political Dialogue

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia and Djibouti have taken a significant step to strengthen their diplomatic partnership after the foreign ministers of both nations met in Mogadishu on Saturday.

Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdisalam Ali welcomed his Djiboutian counterpart, Abdoulkader H. Omar, for high-level talks that focused on bolstering bilateral ties, regional stability, and international cooperation.

The discussions centered on security collaboration and strategies to advance peace and development in the Horn of Africa, a region that continues to grapple with threats from terrorism and climate-related challenges. Both sides underscored the importance of coordinated policies to safeguard common interests and to contribute to regional integration.

A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations. The agreement establishes a framework for regular dialogue between Mogadishu and Djibouti, allowing the two governments to maintain closer communication on pressing political, economic, and security matters.

Speaking after the signing, Ali praised Djibouti for its longstanding role in supporting Somalia’s stability, including its troop contributions to peacekeeping operations. He described the MoU as a milestone that will “institutionalize cooperation and ensure continuous engagement on issues of shared concern.”

Omar reaffirmed Djibouti’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and state-building process, noting that the two nations share “historic bonds of brotherhood and destiny.” He emphasized that enhanced diplomatic collaboration would help both countries confront challenges and harness opportunities for regional development.

The meeting reflects a broader trend of Somalia deepening ties with its neighbors, particularly at a time when the Horn of Africa faces shifting alliances and evolving security dynamics.
