Mogadishu, Somalia– The State Minister of Defence for Somalia, Omar Ali Abdi, and the Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA) Land Forces, Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, held discussions with Egypt’s Defence Attaché, Colonel Ahmed Fathi Al-Husseini, in Mogadishu on Saturday.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral defence ties, with emphasis on military training, capacity building, and Egypt’s upcoming troop deployment under the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Somali officials welcomed Egypt’s engagement, highlighting the importance of regional partnerships in reinforcing national security and stabilisation efforts. The talks also explored avenues for expanding training programs to enhance the operational effectiveness of Somali forces.
Egypt has long expressed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, and its decision to contribute to AUSSOM marks a significant step in Cairo’s commitment to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The discussions come at a critical time, as Somalia and its partners work to secure gains made against Al-Shabaab while preparing for the gradual transition of responsibilities from international missions to national forces.
