Yusuf Mohamed, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, met with Ambassador Pier Mario Daccò Coppi, Italy’s envoy to Somalia, to discuss enhancing Somalia’s labor institutions and advancing the Decent Work Agenda. This meeting, which took place today, underscores Italy’s ongoing commitment to supporting Somali workers and fostering economic development.
Italy has been a steadfast partner in Somalia’s development, contributing to various sectors including infrastructure, energy, and the blue economy. Notably, Italy, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), has initiated support centers for small and medium-sized enterprises in Mogadishu, Kismayo, and Baidoa to stimulate entrepreneurship and economic growth. Additionally, Italy has facilitated Somali entrepreneurs’ participation in international trade fairs, further strengthening private sector ties between the two nations.
In the labor sector, the Italian Ambassador addressed the 5th Quadrennial Congress of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU), expressing solidarity with Somali workers and commending FESTU for its significant role in advancing workers’ rights. He highlighted Italy’s continued support for FESTU, in close collaboration with Italian trade unions and organizations, and outlined various initiatives aimed at strengthening trade unions as a vital force in Somali society.
These collaborative efforts reflect a shared commitment to promoting decent work and improving labor conditions in Somalia, contributing to the nation’s broader goals of economic stability and social development.
