Somalia and Other Horn of Africa Nations Receive €105 Million in Aid Relief from the EU

The European Union has sent a donation of €105 million to Somalia and its Horn of Africa neighbors to tackle COVID-19, locust invasion, and the ravaging floods.

Apart from Somalia, other nations that would benefit from EU’s donation include Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.

The financial package would go towards improving the capacity of the healthcare facilities in the countries to test and treat COVID-19 patients.

Additionally, the funds would help farmers who have suffered huge losses from the locust invasion, which has lasted several months now.

Somalia has suffered 51 COVID-19 fatalities out of the 1,421 cases that it has confirmed. It is now on the brink of a cholera outbreak from the ongoing floods.

Floods have caused River Shabelle’s banks to burst free, a situation that has led to the displacement of more than 412,000 people in Somalia.

In addition to this donation from EU, Somalia is also in line to receive a further $137.5 million from the World Bank to address the multiple crises it faces.
