Somalia and Sudan Deepen Diplomatic Engagement Amid Ongoing Crisis

Mogadishu, Somalia — State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Omar, met with Sudan’s Ambassador Abdulrahman Khalil Ahmed Abakr Afandi in Mogadishu on Sunday for talks centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing the ongoing conflict and humanitarian emergency in Sudan.

The meeting reflected Somalia’s growing diplomatic outreach in the Horn of Africa and its commitment to supporting regional stability. Both sides discussed ways to enhance coordination on peace and humanitarian efforts as Sudan continues to face one of the world’s worst displacement crises, with millions uprooted by the civil war that erupted in April 2023.

Somalia, which has itself endured decades of conflict and recovery, reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s unity and peaceful resolution through dialogue. The government emphasized that peace in Sudan is essential not only for the Sudanese people but also for regional security and economic integration efforts under the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The meeting also highlighted the long-standing ties between Mogadishu and Khartoum, dating back to the early years of independence when the two nations stood together on issues of Pan-African solidarity. As both countries navigate complex internal challenges, officials underscored the importance of maintaining diplomatic engagement and mutual assistance.

The discussion concluded with an understanding that Somalia and Sudan will continue working closely within regional and international frameworks to advance peace, humanitarian relief, and cooperation in areas such as trade, education, and foreign service training.
