MOGADISHU — The Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Sudan have officially established a mutual agreement to waive visa requirements for all diplomatic passport holders. This diplomatic milestone represents a significant advancement in strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating frictionless official interactions between the two Horn of Africa nations.
Formalizing the Exemption
The landmark agreement was formally finalized on April 2, 2026, during the highly anticipated second session of the Somalia-Sudan Political Consultative Committee held in Mogadishu. The committee session was jointly presided over by Hamza Adam Hado, Permanent Secretary at Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Ambassador Moawia Othman Khaled, serving as the Undersecretary of Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new visa exemption is widely anticipated to drastically streamline diplomatic exchanges and augment government-to-government cooperation by allowing unhindered, immediate movement for senior government officials and diplomatic envoys. This strategic move closely aligns with the Somali Federal Cabinet’s recent ratification of national policies and frameworks aimed directly at strengthening foreign diplomatic ties and federal governance.
Broadening Geopolitical Cooperation
During the committee session, both national delegations engaged in comprehensive, closed-door talks aimed at broadening strategic cooperation across several vital sectors. Discussions heavily emphasized expanding political dialogue, forming robust economic partnerships, and launching joint educational initiatives. The delegations also underscored the necessity of reinforcing capacity-building programs and dramatically improving coordination on regional and international matters of mutual concern.
This gathering fundamentally demonstrates the rapidly increasing diplomatic interaction between Mogadishu and Khartoum. As both administrations work to enhance collaboration, they are actively seeking to synchronize their approaches to wider geopolitical and security development objectives across the region—a diplomatic priority similarly highlighted during President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent comprehensive security briefings with international envoys in the capital.
Authorities from both nations conveyed their unwavering dedication to maintaining the consultative framework as a permanent vehicle for promoting shared interests and cementing enduring, strategic connections between the two countries.
