Ankara, Türkiye —Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was formally received today by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, as part of his official visit to the Republic of Türkiye.
The meeting between the two leaders marked a significant step in reaffirming and strengthening the long-standing relations between the two countries.
During their high-level talks, President Mohamud and President Erdoğan reviewed the existing cooperation across key areas including security, economic development, education, infrastructure, and humanitarian assistance.
Both leaders emphasized the enduring “brotherly bond” that has characterized Somalia-Türkiye relations for over a decade.
President Erdoğan welcomed Somalia’s progress in state-building and security stabilization and reiterated Türkiye’s continued commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, development, and resilience.
He also expressed condolences to the Somali people following the recent deadly terrorist attack in Mogadishu, pledging further support in counterterrorism efforts.
President Mohamud, on his part, lauded Türkiye’s unmatched role in Somalia’s recovery, citing Turkish investments in health, education, infrastructure, and public service delivery as transformative. He noted that the Somali people hold deep appreciation for Türkiye’s solidarity during difficult times, particularly during famine and conflict.
Both sides agreed to expand bilateral agreements and explore new avenues for cooperation, particularly in defense training, trade partnerships, and infrastructure development, including port and airport modernization.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to host a joint economic commission later this year, and the two presidents instructed their foreign ministries to fast-track implementation of signed agreements.
President Mohamud’s visit is part of broader diplomatic efforts to strengthen Somalia’s international partnerships amid growing regional tensions and ongoing state-building reforms at home.
