Somalia and Türkiye Leaders Meet in Doha, Pledge Deeper Cooperation

Doha, Qatar — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a high-level meeting in Doha on Monday on the sidelines of the Arab-Islamic Summit, reaffirming their countries’ close partnership and shared positions on key global and regional issues.

According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on security, economic cooperation, and joint diplomatic efforts. They also exchanged views on developments in the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and wider international affairs.

President Mohamud praised Türkiye’s continued role in supporting Somalia’s state-building process, citing long-standing collaboration in infrastructure, humanitarian assistance, education, and military training. He noted that Ankara has remained one of Mogadishu’s most consistent allies during critical moments, including in the fight against terrorism and in responding to drought-driven humanitarian crises.

For his part, President Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening Somalia’s sovereignty, stability, and development. He highlighted Ankara’s interest in expanding investment opportunities and further integrating Somalia into regional economic initiatives, while also pledging continued diplomatic backing in multilateral forums.

The Doha meeting comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with Somalia navigating both domestic security challenges and disputes in the Horn of Africa. Both leaders underscored the importance of collective efforts to resolve conflicts and advance peace across the Islamic world.

The Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha gathered heads of state, diplomats, and international organizations to address pressing issues facing Muslim-majority nations, including regional conflicts, economic resilience, and humanitarian crises.
