Admiral Abdi Warsame Osman Maalin, the Commander of the Somali Navy and Coast Guard, has been placed under house arrest due to allegations of corruption.
Somali Army Chief General Odowa Yusuf Raage confirmed that, effective December 26, 2024, Admiral Maalin is confined to his home pending the outcome of the investigation.
In the interim, General Abdiwahid Ali Afrah Nuura has been appointed to lead the Somali Navy and Coastal Defense Command.
The specific details of the corruption allegations have not been disclosed.
This action is part of a broader initiative by the Somali government to address corruption within its military and government institutions.
Earlier in April 2024, several members of the U.S.-trained Danab commando unit were suspended and detained for stealing rations provided by the United States.
The Danab unit plays a crucial role in Somalia’s counterterrorism strategy, with the U.S. pledging over $100 million in February to support the construction of five military bases for the elite force.
These measures underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within its security forces, which is essential for the stability and governance of Somalia.
