Nairobi, Kenya – The Commissioner of the National Agency for Refugees and Displaced Persons (NRDP), Ahmed Hussen Elmi, headed a Somali delegation at the annual IGAD summit of ministers and agencies handling refugee and displacement matters. This senior-level forum attracted representatives from IGAD member states to evaluate progress, obstacles, and key priorities for the year ahead, placing emphasis on finding sustainable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Before the summit, the NRDP introduced Somalia’s Durable Solutions Plan, which underscores the nation’s strengthened dedication to sustainable support for displaced populations. At the heart of this plan lies the Internally Displaced Persons Bill, recently approved by both houses of parliament, signifying a key advancement in enhancing legal protections and ongoing aid for IDPs.
The Nairobi summit will end tomorrow, after which a joint statement will be released. The statement will detail collective priorities and direct IGAD’s regional approach to promoting durable solutions across member states.
