Lusaka, Zambia — The Office of the Auditor General of Somalia took part in the joint workshop hosted by the African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) and the Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEI) held in Lusaka, Zambia, from July 15 to 18.
The high-level workshop brought together regional audit authorities to discuss the intersection of mineral resource management, environmental protection, and citizen-centred governance. Somalia’s delegation contributed to sessions focused on strengthening public audit oversight in the extractives sector, emphasizing the need for transparency, sustainability, and accountability.
With the growing role of mining in Africa’s development, participants underscored the urgency of robust institutional frameworks to prevent exploitation, environmental degradation, and loss of public revenue.
The event stressed that Supreme Audit Institutions must step up efforts to ensure natural resource governance benefits the people and aligns with national development goals.
The Auditor General of Somalia reaffirmed the country’s commitment to enhancing audit practices in line with international standards, noting that good governance in natural resource management is key to peacebuilding and long-term stability.
This workshop marked a significant step in fostering regional collaboration to build audit capacity, particularly in countries navigating post-conflict reconstruction and institutional reform.
The event concluded with a joint resolution urging member states to integrate environmental and social safeguards into mining audits and to promote citizen engagement in monitoring resource governance.
