Somalia Backs Candidate for Chairmanship of the African Union

Somalia has backed a female candidate who is interested in vying for the seat of the Chairperson of the African Union (AU).

Dr. Fawzia Yusuf H. Adam, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Somali government, will vie for the seat once it falls vacant.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre have already thrown their weight behind the ex-minister’s candidature.

AU will hold elections in early 2025.

Despite its unique position as one of the founding members of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Somalia has never held a senior or prominent position in the AU.
