Somalia has joined the international call for urgent action against the spread of cholera, as the deadly disease continues to threaten vulnerable populations across the continent.
Speaking at a high-level multisectoral meeting hosted by Zambia, Somalia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Hajiadam Abubakar, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to curb cholera outbreaks. He highlighted that the disease is having a devastating impact, particularly on children under the age of five.
“Cholera remains a major public health threat in Somalia and many other parts of Africa. We must act swiftly and together to protect our communities—especially our children—from this preventable disease,” Dr. Abubakar.
The meeting brought together health ministers and partners from across the region to discuss strategic responses, resource mobilization, and long-term prevention plans. Somalia’s participation signals its commitment to regional health security and the well-being of its most at-risk populations.
