Somalia Backs Landmark MoU with Türkiye and African Coastal Nations

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has officially endorsed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) alongside Türkiye and other African coastal nations aimed at enhancing regional transport connectivity.

The agreement, signed during a high-level gathering on maritime cooperation, marks a major step toward advancing intra-regional trade, port infrastructure, and strategic economic collaboration.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government of Somalia, Nur emphasized that Somalia is committed to playing a proactive role in maritime development and regional integration.

“This MoU is a vital step toward building modern and efficient transport corridors that link Africa’s coastline more effectively with global markets,” Nur stated.

The initiative, led by Türkiye and supported by a coalition of African coastal states, focuses on strengthening maritime logistics, improving port infrastructure, sharing technical expertise, and fostering sustainable economic partnerships across the continent.

It is part of a broader vision to facilitate economic growth through better access to trade routes and streamlined maritime governance.

The agreement also aligns with Somalia’s National Ports Development Strategy and complements ongoing bilateral cooperation with Türkiye, which has invested significantly in Somalia’s port infrastructure, particularly in Mogadishu.

Observers note that this MoU not only boosts Somalia’s role in shaping regional trade networks but also positions the country as a key gateway between East Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

The deal is expected to attract new investment, create jobs, and improve port efficiency—particularly as Somalia rebuilds its maritime capacity after decades of instability.

The endorsement reflects growing confidence in Somalia’s reemergence as a regional maritime player and underscores the importance of international cooperation in unlocking Africa’s economic potential.
