Somalia Breaks Ground on New Mogadishu International Airport

Haawaay, Middle Shabelle –  Somalia took a major step toward modernizing its aviation sector on Sunday as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially laid the foundation stone for the new Mogadishu International Airport in Haawaay, located in the Middle Shabelle region.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the launch of a transformative infrastructure project aimed at elevating Somalia’s regional standing and improving air connectivity across East Africa. The new airport is expected to feature world-class facilities that comply with international aviation standards, positioning Mogadishu as a strategic air transport hub.

Speaking at the event, President Mohamud hailed the project as a national milestone and a symbol of Somalia’s progress.

“This airport will be a gateway to opportunity, linking our people to the world and reinforcing our role as a key player in East Africa. It is a clear sign that Somalia is moving forward with purpose, unity, and ambition,” said President Mohamud.

Designed to accommodate increasing passenger and cargo traffic, the airport will include a modern passenger terminal, extended runways for larger aircraft, advanced navigation and safety systems, and streamlined immigration and customs facilities. The site in Haawaay was selected for its strategic location, offering expansion potential and easing congestion in the capital’s current airport zone.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation confirmed that the airport will be constructed in phases and will incorporate sustainability measures and resilience to climate-related risks. Officials also highlighted the airport’s role in job creation, with thousands of employment opportunities expected during both the construction and operational phases.

The new facility is part of the federal government’s broader infrastructure development agenda, which prioritizes transportation, trade, and economic integration across Somalia. With support from international partners and investors, the project is set to redefine Somalia’s aviation landscape and enhance regional cooperation.

Once completed, the new Mogadishu International Airport will serve as a vital link for business, tourism, and humanitarian operations, signaling a new era of connectivity and economic growth for the country.
