Somalia Calls UN-Imposed Development Deadlines “Unreasonable”

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has labeled the development deadlines imposed by the United Nations “unreasonable.”

Gamal Hassan, Somalia’s Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, wrote a letter to the Office of the Representative of the UN Secretary General protesting this issue.

In his letter, Hassan stated that the United Nations was “inconsiderate” in some of the demands and deadlines that it set for the country to actualize.

Furthermore, he said that it was “unfair” for the UN to pressure Somalia to adopt the development document within a short time when the country lacks the necessary capacity.

Hassan said that the government “lacks sufficient human resources that match the demands of its mandate.”

The document in contention is the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), which the UN General Council passed in 2019.
