Somalia–China Anniversary Marked by Fresh Pledge of Drought Support

Mogadishu, Somalia- On Tuesday,  Somalia and China commemorated 65 years of diplomatic ties with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasizing Beijing’s sustained political and development support, including fresh aid for drought-impacted communities.

Addressing attendees at a Mogadishu ceremony, PM Barre stated that the relationship established in 1960 has been built on mutual respect for sovereignty and practical collaboration, noting China’s steadfast support of Somalia amid evolving regional and global circumstances.

He praised China’s recent commitment of $1 million to assist drought-affected Somalis, calling the assistance timely and indicative of a partnership that provides concrete benefits to the nation’s recovery and humanitarian efforts.

The anniversary highlighted the depth of bilateral connections and China’s position as a vital development partner as Somalia pursues increased investment, humanitarian assistance, and global engagement. Cabinet ministers, diplomats, and guests attended the event, reinforcing what Somali authorities describe as a relationship that will remain integral to the nation’s rebuilding and future development.
