Somalia Confronts Iran over Illegal Fishing in Its Waters

Somalia has confronted Iran over the illegal fishing carried in its waters courtesy of a fleet from the Middle East nation.

Several fishing fleet were spotted operating in exclusive economic zones (EEZ) belonging to both Yemen and Somalia.

Consequently, Abdillahi Warsame, Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources asked Iran to provide more information on the illegal fishing.

Warsame said most of the ships captured were from several Iranian ports that include Ramin, Tiyab, Bandar-e, and Konarak among others.

The fisheries minister also stated that the presence of Iranian fleets at Northwest Indian Ocean remains “a matter of grave concern” to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

He reminded Iran that the presence of its ship on Somalia waters threatens the country’s food security.

Further, he said Somalia’s maritime ecology, economic development, and sovereignty are massively at risk because of the Iranian ships.

Warsame’s sentiments come hot on the heels of a recent Global Fishing Watch and Trygg Mat Tracking report that highlighted the presence of Iranian ships on Somali and Yemeni EEZs.
