Weather experts have warned that Somalia is in line to experience a drier-than-usual rainfall season from October 2020.
According to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the phenomenon would not be limited to Somalia alone.
Instead, other countries in the region are likely to experience a dry season too.
IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Center (ICPAC) listed some of the countries as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and Ethiopia.
Specifically, the southern, central, and northwestern parts of Somalia are most vulnerable.
However, ICPAC mentioned that northern parts of Somalia are likely to experience a higher than usual rainfall season between October and December.
The news puts a further dent on Somalia’s efforts to emerge from multiple emergencies.
In 2020, the East African country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing floods, and the locust infestation.
All these crises have worsened the country’s food security.
A drier-than-usual rainfall season is likely to exacerbate the situation further and expose more Somalis to hunger or possible starvation.
