Somalia has declared the locust invasion in the country a national emergency. In the process, it is the first country in the Horn of Africa region to take such a step.
Locusts have invaded the region since the beginning of the year, 2020.
In a statement to the media, the country’s Minister for Agriculture said, “the infestation is a huge threat to our food security situation, which is already quite fragile.”
The statement also said, “We have seen a massive increase in risk to the sources of food that people and livestock rely on.”
Somalia is in a precarious situation. The harvesting season is in April. Consequently, timely solutions are necessary to ensure that the insects do not destroy the country’s harvests.
