MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia has officially labeled as fraudulent a document circulating online that purportedly indicated Mogadishu’s reaffirmed support for the Islamic Republic of Iran, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a firm statement released Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation clarified that the widely shared document, titled “Somali Reaffirms Support For The Islamic Republic Of Iran,” was completely counterfeit and was never issued by the federal government.
“The circulating document is fake and was not issued by the Ministry,” the official declaration stated. Authorities strongly advised the public and international media to disregard the forgery and to only consider diplomatic communications published through verified, official government channels.
A3 Bloc Urges Restraint at the UN
This swift denial follows reported regional hostilities on February 28, 2026, which elicited sharp diplomatic responses from multiple capitals and necessitated emergency crisis discussions at the United Nations Security Council.
During a high-stakes Security Council meeting the previous day, Somalia’s representative, speaking on behalf of the A3 (the three African non-permanent members: Somalia, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo), urged maximum restraint and constructive dialogue instead of armed confrontation.
“The A3 reiterates that all member states must respect their obligations under international law,” the Somali envoy emphasized, delivering a unified African message focused squarely on diplomacy and strict compliance with international legal frameworks.
Navigating Geopolitical Sensitivities
The UN Council session addressed the rapidly deteriorating security situation across the Middle East, with several permanent and non-permanent members cautioning that any further escalation could severely jeopardize both regional and global stability.
Against this highly volatile backdrop, Somalia’s foreign ministry acted quickly to distance the federal government from the alleged statement supporting Iran. The rapid response highlights the extreme delicacy of Mogadishu’s diplomatic positioning and its strict commitment to maintaining a balanced, legally grounded stance during intensifying geopolitical conflicts.
