Mogadishu, Somalia — Somalia’s Attorney General, Suleyman Mohamud, on Thursday hosted a high-level delegation from the East African Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association (EAMJA) for talks aimed at deepening regional judicial cooperation and reinforcing the rule of law across East Africa.
The meeting brought together senior legal minds to deliberate on strengthening cross-border legal frameworks, sharing judicial best practices, and addressing emerging regional challenges that demand coordinated legal responses.
Attorney General Mohamud underscored the importance of a united judiciary in safeguarding regional stability, noting that “justice systems must not work in isolation if we are to effectively combat transnational crime, uphold citizens’ rights, and build lasting peace.”
EAMJA representatives commended Somalia’s ongoing judicial reforms and expressed readiness to support capacity-building initiatives, technical exchanges, and harmonization of certain legal procedures among member states.
The discussions also touched on the necessity of modernizing court processes, ensuring judicial independence, and fostering mutual trust between East African nations’ legal institutions. Both sides agreed that a collaborative judiciary is a cornerstone for sustainable development, conflict resolution, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
The visit marks a renewed commitment by East African legal leaders to close cooperation in an era where regional security, commerce, and human rights are increasingly interconnected.
