Somalia Empowers Farmers with New Tools to Boost Yield

Mogadishu, SomaliaIn a major push to transform Somalia’s agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Abdi Hayir has launched a new initiative to equip local farmers with vital farming tools and machinery, including cargo motorcycles and grain processing equipment.

The effort, rolled out in collaboration with Qatar Charity, aims to enhance productivity, ease transportation of farm produce, and strengthen post-harvest handling. The move is expected to significantly reduce losses and increase income for smallholder farmers.

“This program is part of the government’s long-term strategy to modernize agriculture and fight rural poverty. We are not only giving equipment; we are giving opportunity and hope,” Hayir said during the distribution ceremony.

Farmers welcomed the support, saying it would improve efficiency and access to markets. The cargo motorcycles will allow them to transport goods with greater ease, while the grain processors will help reduce labor and post-harvest waste.

Qatar Charity reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s development, noting that sustainable agriculture is a key pillar in poverty alleviation and economic growth.

The initiative comes amid renewed efforts by the Somali government to empower rural communities and strengthen food security across the country.
