Somalia Endorses Major Transport MoU with Türkiye and African Coastal States

Mogadishu – Somalia’s Council of Ministers has unanimously approved a landmark multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Republic of Türkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and a coalition of African coastal nations.

The endorsement marks a critical step in regional integration and improved maritime connectivity across Africa’s coastline.

The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in transportation infrastructure, facilitate the seamless movement of goods and services, and promote joint investments in ports, logistics corridors, and related sectors. It also seeks to harmonize policies on maritime safety, sustainability, and digital transformation in transport systems.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre chaired the cabinet session in which the MoU was endorsed, emphasizing the strategic importance of the deal for Somalia’s economic development and regional engagement. He noted that the partnership would contribute significantly to modernizing Somalia’s transport infrastructure and enhancing its role in regional trade.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, which represented Somalia in the negotiations, lauded Türkiye’s leadership in fostering South-South cooperation and facilitating long-term partnerships with African nations.

Officials say this agreement complements Somalia’s broader National Development Plan and aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 objectives on infrastructure integration and economic transformation.

The MoU is expected to pave the way for new development projects, technical expertise exchanges, and capacity building among the signatory states, further boosting Somalia’s connectivity and regional competitiveness.
