Somalia Endorses Unified TVET Curriculum to Boost Youth Skills and Employment

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant stride toward transforming technical and vocational education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education has concluded a two-day workshop to validate the revised and harmonized Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum.

The workshop, which brought together 70 representatives from TVET centers, curriculum experts, and education officials from the Federal Member States and the Benadir Regional Administration, marks a new chapter in Somalia’s effort to align education with labor market demands.

The revised curriculum — developed after months of nationwide consultations — was unanimously endorsed by participants. It sets out to establish uniform national standards that reflect the realities of Somalia’s evolving job market and economic priorities.

Director Generals from Federal Member State Ministries of Education and the Rajo Kaaba Project Manager commended the collaborative process that shaped the curriculum. They noted that the harmonized framework would help young Somalis gain practical skills relevant to industries such as construction, renewable energy, agriculture, and information technology — sectors seen as key drivers of employment and economic recovery.

“This unified curriculum is not just about classrooms and textbooks; it’s about giving our youth the skills they need to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth,” one official said during the closing session.

By streamlining training standards across the country, the Ministry hopes to ensure that certificates earned at any accredited TVET institution carry equal value nationwide. Officials say the reform will also strengthen coordination between education providers and employers, improving pathways for youth to transition from training into decent work.

The successful endorsement of the TVET curriculum stands as a collective achievement — a reflection of Somalia’s growing commitment to building a skilled, self-reliant workforce capable of shaping a more prosperous future.
