The United States has pledged $8m to help three East African countries combat the spread of locusts. Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are set to benefit from these funds.
Desert locusts have left massive destructions behind in the region. They threaten food security, which is already in a horrible condition.
The locusts have put the entire region in panic mode.
However, the injection of $8m to help the three Horn of Africa nations to combat the menace is welcome news.
Mike Pompeo, the United States Secretary of State, made this announcement in Addis Ababa during a press conference held jointly with Gedu Andargachew, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister.
The locusts, which could already be in their billions, are projected to multiply substantially. All efforts aimed at stopping the infestation are yet to bear fruit.
