Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was warmly received by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali in Addis Ababa ahead of the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit. The high-level meeting underscored a mutual commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation between the neighboring Horn of Africa nations.
During their discussions, President Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy exchanged views on strengthening political, economic, and security ties, with a special focus on regional stability and food security. The leaders emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration to combat climate shocks, drought, and other challenges that continue to affect food systems in the region.
The talks also served as a platform to reaffirm both countries’ readiness to work through dialogue despite past tensions, particularly regarding maritime access and sovereignty. President Mohamud reiterated Somalia’s stance on preserving its territorial integrity, while both sides acknowledged the need for peaceful mechanisms to resolve disputes and foster trust.
The summit, hosted under the auspices of the United Nations, brings together global and regional stakeholders to transform food systems through sustainable development, resilience-building, and equitable resource distribution. Somalia and Ethiopia, both grappling with climate-driven food insecurity, are key players in these regional dialogues.
President Mohamud’s visit is part of a broader diplomatic effort to reposition Somalia as a proactive partner in regional development and cooperation frameworks. The meeting with PM Abiy is seen as a crucial step toward easing tensions and paving the way for a more stable and interconnected Horn of Africa.
