Mogadishu, Somalia – The Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, convened a high-level meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S), reinforcing the strategic partnership between the EU and Somalia in the security sector.
The EUTM-S delegation was led by Colonel Riccardo Peretto, Head of the EUTM-S Advisory Team, and included senior EU military officials. Senior officials from Somalia’s Ministry of Defence also participated in the talks.
Fiqi extended deep appreciation to the European Union for its sustained support to Somalia’s security sector. He emphasized the critical importance of the EUTM-S mission, which has played a vital role in training Somali forces, enhancing institutional capacity, and contributing to broader peacebuilding efforts across the country.
“The EUTM-S is a key partner in rebuilding Somalia’s defence sector. Their continued assistance is not only strengthening our military capabilities but also paving the way for long-term peace and security,” Fiqi stated.
During the meeting, the EUTM-S delegation outlined the mission’s current engagements and achievements, including the training of Somali National Army (SNA) personnel, advisory support to defence institutions, and assistance in modernizing command structures. They also presented new proposals aligned with the ministry’s strategic priorities.
The two sides discussed future areas of collaboration, with a focus on deepening institutional reforms, expanding training programs, and fostering operational readiness in preparation for the eventual full handover of security responsibilities to Somali forces.
The EUTM-S mission, which has been active in Somalia since 2010, operates under the framework of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). It aims to strengthen the Somali security apparatus through structured training, mentoring, and strategic advice.
Today’s meeting marks another step forward in the EU-Somalia partnership, as the Federal Government continues its efforts to build a capable, professional, and accountable national defence force.
