Somalia Evacuates 14 Nationals from Algeria in Anti-Irregular Migration Effort

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has successfully evacuated 14 Somali nationals from Algeria as part of its broader efforts to combat irregular migration and protect the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad.

The operation, coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, was undertaken in close collaboration with international partners and Somali diplomatic missions. It is part of Somalia’s ongoing repatriation initiative targeting citizens stranded or at risk in foreign countries due to irregular migration routes.

According to ministry officials, the returnees included young men who had embarked on perilous journeys across North Africa in hopes of reaching Europe. Many of them were reportedly facing difficult conditions, including detention and lack of access to basic services in Algeria.

“This evacuation is part of our national strategy to protect vulnerable Somalis and to address the root causes of irregular migration. We are committed to ensuring our citizens are treated with dignity and are safely reintegrated upon their return,” said a government official while receiving the returnees at the airport.

The evacuees arrived in Mogadishu on Friday and were received by government representatives and humanitarian agencies who will assist with their rehabilitation and reintegration. Social support, counseling, and vocational training opportunities are expected to be offered as part of the reintegration package.

The Somali government has pledged to intensify awareness campaigns on the dangers of irregular migration and continue working with international and regional stakeholders to provide legal, safe, and dignified migration pathways.

This latest operation follows similar evacuations from Libya, Sudan, and other transit countries along the Central Mediterranean route, which remains one of the most dangerous migration corridors globally.
