Somalia Exports 1,500 Tons of Sesame Seeds to the Middle East

Somalia exported 1,500 tons of sesame seeds to the Middle East in 2020, according to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID released a report on November 17 commending Somalia for this incredible milestone achieved despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the organization, Somalia worked hard to retain its position as the eighth largest producer and exporter of sesame in the world.

In USAID’s statement, Somalia achieved this milestone with support from the Growth, Employment and Livelihoods (GEEL).

GEEL is a project funded by USAID to enhance economic growth and development throughout the East African nation.

Sesame seeds from the Horn of Africa country are quite popular in the Middle East.
