Somalia Fails to Meet Parliamentary Elections Deadline

Somalia failed to meet the deadline set during the National Consultative Conference by Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) for parliamentary elections.

According to the agreement negotiated and signed in September 2020, Somalia was to kick off parliamentary elections from December 1.

However, it seems impractical and illogical to expect the polls any time soon.

That is because Somalia’s political leadership is yet to agree on the composition of the federal electoral commissions.

The opposition accused the government of filling the commissions with loyalists and National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) agents.

It is not clear when or if the parliamentary elections would take place this month as previously envisaged.
