Somalia Flight Ban Causes Huge Losses to Miraa Farmers

The decision by the Federal Government of Somalia to suspend all international flights has caused huge losses to miraa farmers and traders in the region.

FGS clarified that the ban is not limited to passenger flights alone. Instead, it stated that the ban applies to cargo planes too.

The ban came into force last week on Monday when Ethiopia and Kenya, two of the Horn of Africa countries hit hardest by Coronavirus, and will be in place for the next 15 days.

Somalia took this drastic measure after confirming its first Coronavirus case. The ban has attracted a huge disruption in trade and social life in the country.

Kimathi Munjuri, the Chairman of Nyambene Miraa Traders Association, says they have been unable to export any miraa to Somalia. He says they only have 50 tons of miraa to trade with.
