Mogadishu, Somalia — The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is set to host the 2nd Somali National ID Conference in Mogadishu from November 24 to 25 under the theme “From Identity to Impact: Building Somalia’s Digital Ecosystem.”
The two-day gathering is expected to bring together government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, and technology experts to accelerate efforts toward a secure and inclusive digital identity system in Somalia. The discussions will focus on how a functional national ID can unlock access to services, enhance governance, and support economic growth across the country.
Since its establishment, NIRA has played a central role in Somalia’s digital transition, developing systems that link identity management with public service delivery and financial inclusion. The upcoming conference aims to build on this progress, showcasing new innovations and policy frameworks designed to ensure that every Somali citizen can be recognized and accounted for in the country’s digital ecosystem.
Participants will also explore ways to strengthen data protection, interoperability between institutions, and the use of digital IDs in elections, social welfare, and security. The event is seen as a crucial step in aligning Somalia’s identity systems with global digital transformation goals while addressing the specific challenges of implementation in post-conflict settings.
As anticipation builds, NIRA’s initiative reflects a growing recognition that identity is more than a card—it is a pathway to opportunity, accountability, and national unity. The conference is poised to reaffirm Somalia’s commitment to leveraging technology for inclusive development and stronger governance in the years ahead.
