Somalia Gets Approval to Issue East African Community Passport

DAR ES SALAAM — The Federal Government of Somalia has officially secured approval to issue the East African Community (EAC) passport, a development described as a pivotal advancement in the nation’s regional integration and diplomatic standing within the bloc.

Ambassador Ilyas Ali Hassan, Somalia’s envoy to Tanzania and permanent representative to the East African Community, formally presented the authorization decision to the Minister of Internal Security, General Abdulahi Sheikh Ismail “Fartaag”, and the Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), Mustafa Sheikh Ahmed Dhuhulow.

Operational Milestone

The authorization grants Somalia the right to issue the EAC passport, endorsing its official design and security specifications. Under this new framework, the Federal Republic of Somalia is scheduled to commence the issuance of the regional travel document starting in December 2025.

This transfer underscores Somalia’s continued adherence to EAC standards and frameworks, which mandate standardized travel documentation to facilitate seamless mobility among member states.

Strengthening Regional Ties

This achievement coincides with the signing of a bilateral agreement between Somalia and Tanzania, further cementing the cooperative relationship between the two nations. The approval is viewed as a significant diplomatic victory, reaffirming Mogadishu’s dedication to deep regional integration.
