Somalia Government Loses Millions to Corruption, New Report Reveals

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has been losing millions of US dollars to corruption, a new report reveals.

Mohamed Ali Afgoi, Somalia’s Auditor General, published a new report on November 22 on the country’s public finances.

The Auditor General’s report shows that key departments in the government are responsible for the huge losses.

Auditor General revealed that his department audited 25 government entities as well as 3 embassies.

The report reveals that Somalia has lost US$9 million under unsupported expenditure.

Additionally, contracts worth more than $31 million were yet to be registered with the Office of the Auditor General.

On top of that, Auditor General Afgoi cited the lack of channeling of over US$17 million of external support as a cause of concern.

His report didn’t absolve the regional state administrations of any blame either.

Afgoi’s report shows that Federal Member States (FMS) and the Banadir Regional Administration (BRA) are yet to account for $78 million received from FGS.
