Somalia Has the World’s Third Highest Maternal Mortality Rate, Says SIHR

Somalia has the third-highest Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in the world.

Somali Institute for Health Research (SIHR) published its latest MMR report, which it released on Friday, June 17.

In the report, SIHR stated that the country has an MMR of 693 per 1,000.

SIHR stated that the rate is the second-highest in the world. The only other country that does worse than Somalia is South Sudan, as per SIHR’s report.

According to SIHR, the high MMR in Somalia is because of the abundance of risk factors in the East African nation.

Some of these risk factors include the long-distance that mothers have to travel to access healthcare services.

Additionally, only 21 percent of mothers in Somalia give birth at health facilities.

In addition to that, 32 percent of Somali mothers gave birth without the assistance of any skilled birth attendant.
