Somalia Honors Troops After Fierce Battle With Al-Shabaab in El-Dheer

El-Dheer, Galguduud – Somalia has paid tribute to its soldiers for their courage in one of the toughest clashes with Al-Shabaab in recent months, awarding medals and certificates to troops who played a decisive role in repelling a major assault in the town of El-Dheer, Galguduud region.

At a ceremony held in the town, the Commander of the Army’s Infantry Division, Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, commended the forces for their “heroic sacrifice” in defending both their comrades and the community. He personally presented honours and special awards to the soldiers and officers who stood firm against an estimated 700 Al-Shabaab fighters during the assault.

According to Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somali forces, backed by coordinated air and ground operations and with the support of local residents, managed to repel the large-scale attack. At least 60 Al-Shabaab militants were killed and more than 50 wounded during the nearly seven-hour battle that erupted on Friday last week.

The minister emphasized that the militants had intended to overrun El-Dheer and destabilize wider areas of Galguduud but were decisively defeated. He added that the success demonstrated the growing capability of the Somali National Army and the effectiveness of collaboration with local communities.

Prayers were also offered during the ceremony for the soldiers who were martyred in the confrontation. Military officials said their sacrifice ensured not only the protection of El-Dheer but also sent a strong message to Al-Shabaab that their attempts to destabilize the region would be met with fierce resistance.

The battle is being hailed as one of the most significant engagements in the army’s ongoing campaign against the group this year, underscoring Somalia’s commitment to reclaiming territory and restoring security across the country.
